Operations using fractions, percentages, decimals and integers.

In Maths we have been learning to: Understand operations using fractions, percentages, decimals and integers.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

Percentage problems total unknown -

Extended Abstract assessment task - Lazer Blazer task/answers.

Something that challenged me during this unit of learning was the extended abstract activity because it wasn't super easy.

My next step is to continue to apply these strategies to real life/ problem solving situations.

Elections Writing

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

“Delivering for New Zealanders”the National party is the greatest party and we don't need to change government in this year's election.
I believe that the National party is best kept in government as this is the best option for us.
For instance; the the justice system is lacking and it could be better, criminals are going unpunished and without the correct punishment and there is much that National can do about it that other parties can’t.These are all things that National had promised to address in their next term in government that I strongly believe will benefit New Zealand the most. Personally, I think that the promise about allowing police to search properties without a warrant for firearms and meth is excellent for policing

If National was re-elected they would like to allow police to search cars and houses for firearms without a warrant in some cases. This policy is stating that police will be allowed to search  cars and houses for firearms without a warrant in some cases. This policy is good because it can lower the number of meth and firearm related crimes it the cities of New Zealand. This policy is also good because it could potentially stop firearm and drug trades in New Zealand.Another policing policy that National hopes to accomplish is a new criminal offence for inappropriate use of meth.

Not if but when National is re-elected they wish to create a new criminal policy for people who contaminate rental properties with meth.Essentially they want to create a new policy to hopefully stop more criminals from committing meth related crimes. This is a good policy because it can stop meth related crimes in NZ, It means that meth users will get the punishment that they deserve.
National has a lot of policing policies but there are also some policies that will benefit the people of New Zealand.

National would hope to create a 24/7 phone line for non emergencies when they are re-elected.
This policy is stating that National will be introducing a 24 hour 7 day a week phone line for non emergencies. This policy is a good idea because it will be for all hours of the year so people can call whenever they have problems, this is a good policy because it can help people with their issues.
Overall National have a lot of great policies but other parties such as Green with their legalise marijuana policy.

National is trying to get rid of drugs but the Green party is trying to legalise them (Marijuana).
The Green party wants to legalize marijuana and that isn’t good for the health of our citizens, both the users and non-users.This policy is bad because it puts the health and safety of NZ citizens in jeopardy, and this also is bad because people can fake being sick to get legal marijuana.
Overall there are a lot of pros and cons to politics and parties that run them.

My next steps are:

To put in more complex vocabulary and sentences.

Koru games reflection.

In the Koru Games the sport I competed in was boys volleyball.

Our team won all of our games up until the final.

I found the experience to be good because I got to learn new things throughout the games.

In terms of working with Individuals and Groups; my solo level is extended abstract because I can work very well in a team and I can include everyone in the sport.

For Teamwork; my solo level is also extended abstract because I can participate in creating a great team atmosphere by taking responsibility and actions in a critical manner.

Individuals and groups
I need help to work in a group (with teachers or other students
I can work in a group with my friends.
I can work in a group with anyone in my  year level or team

I can respond positively to the needs of others
I can reflect on how well I work with the group and seek feedback on how I can improve
Teamwork

I need help to interact with others.

I need help to participate in a team.
I can interact with others one to one.

I can participate in a team.
I can interact with others in a small group.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team and explain my choices in terms of team outcomes.
I can participate in creating healthy teams by taking responsibility and critical action.

Convert between metric units using decimals.

In Maths we have been learning………..

Convert between metric units using decimals.
Converting is part of our Number Knowledge.
It is important to just know these as we can use this knowledge when we are solving measurement problems.

Here are the IXL screenshots that show evidence of my learning.

SKI JUMP  - This is the activity that shows my ability to apply the knowledge I have learned.

Here is link to my Ski Jump problem solving activity answer sheet. Ski Jump Answer sheet

My next  step in Maths is…… to use this new knowledge to help me solve a wide variety of measurement problems

Letter Writing

In Writing we have been learnin' to: Write a formal letter.

We have followed the writing process and have planned and drafted a formal letter.

This shows the process that we have followed.

Here is the letter that I have written Draft letter

Here is my reflection on the letter writing that we have done.

One thing that I found challengin' about writing formal letters was thinking about what to write

My next step is: look for more opportunities to put my letter writing knowledge into practice in the future.

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel … Run by Linda Aksomitis

I found this novel ok because the story was partially enjoyable but overall it wasn't the greatest book ever.

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 9/10 Standard
    • I can locate, evaluate, analyse and summarize information and ideas within texts and across a range of texts.
    • I have a large vocabulary that is connected to my own knowledge about the world and includes: - academic e.g observe vs watch - subject-specific (specific words about a subject (e.g feline) - technical terms (specialized vocabulary of a particular field.)

Overall I would give this novel a rating of  5/10 and I would /would not  recommend it to others to read because overall I found this book quite boring and because Jacob's sections are very vexatious to read because whenever there is an 'ing' he gets rid of the g and puts an apostrophe in its place.

Music Term 2

For Music this term, three things I learnt were:
1. NZ artists compared to international artists
2. Visual communication
3. We learned a rap called Mother Earth Rap

Something I found challenging was Identifying NZ artists and International artists.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

  • Year 7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. I learned the importance of spelling.

  1. I learned that the format needs to be professional.

  1. I learned that it needs to be true.

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae. (C.V.)

geometry

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions involving circles

part 1 and 2 corners/bends 114.668 each, part 3 and 4 85.332 each straights

To find out the length of rope you must take the radius and times it by two, in this case it’s 36.5m so it becomes 73. Then you times 73 by pi giving you 229.336m. To find out the length of the bends you half it. For the straights you subtract 229.336 from 400 giving you 170.664 and then you half that giving you 85.332 for each of the straights and 114.668 for each of the bends.

Reason with linear proportions.

WALT: Reason with linear proportions
I have been learning 3 WALTS
1.National Standard 1: Combine simple proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up in a unit of 10 like 3 yellow with 7 blue, 5 yellow with 5 blue, 4 yellow with 6 blue. Say what the fraction and percentage of each stack is for yellow and blue.
2.National Standard 2: - Combine proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up of using non-multiple of 10 like 8 yellow:5 blue:4 white with 11 yellow:11 blue:11 white (19:16:15 and 38%:32%:30%)
3. National Standard 3: - Order fractions with unlike denominators by finding a common denominator
My evidence: assessment task
My next step is: geometry

Evaluate text

Title: Reading - Evaluate Texts

In reading we have been learning to….apply some criteria to evaluate texts eg accuracy of information and presence of bias.

We have been evaluating texts against the following four criteria:
  1. Readability
  2. Accuracy
  3. Relevance
  4. Quality of language/ information.

These documents show evidence of my learning during this unit:
(link your own learning for each of these activities. Please make sure your sharing settings are open)

My Next Step: Is to continue to apply this new knowledge and evaluate texts as I read them, checking for readability, accuracy, relevance and quality of language/ information

walt Investigate situations that involve elements of chance by comparing experimental distributions with expectations from models of the possible outcomes, acknowledging variation and independence.

Assessment task: Investigate situations that involve elements of chance by comparing experimental distributions with expectations from models of the possible outcomes, acknowledging variation and independence.

Question 1:

Show your working and answer here (you may need to add a photo of a tree diagram you frew on your little whiteboard): Since Aroha did not play connie, that means either beth played connie or  Delsey played connie. But because we know that Beth played Delsey and won. We can conclude that both beth and Delsey won their first games and Beth won the final.

Question 2:
Car number plates in the land of Automobile have two letters and two digits. How many different number plates could be made using two letters and two digits?

Show your working and answers here 26x26x99= 66924
